About Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park

Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park

Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park, located in the northern Guatemalan department of Petén, offers a unique blend of archaeological significance and natural beauty. The park covers an area of approximately 145,000 acres and encompasses a vast expanse of tropical forest, lagoons, and a series of Mayan archaeological sites, including Yaxha, Nakum, and Naranjo. The biodiversity in this area is remarkable, with a diverse array of wildlife such as jaguars, howler monkeys, and more than 300 bird species. Historically, this region was a bustling center of Mayan civilization during the classic period, with Yaxha acting as one of the leading urban centers. Visitors can explore the ancient ruins, including temples, palaces, and plazas that remain interconnected by well-preserved sacbe (ceremonial roads). In addition to its historical appeal, the park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, and photography, particularly at sunrise and sunset from the pyramids, which provide panoramic views of the surrounding jungle and lakes.
